Geared continuous hinges are the best option for high-traffic doors, but only if you choose the right duty hinge for the job. Install a standard duty hinge on a high-traffic, abused or heavy door and you won't enjoy the long-lasting benefits the right hinge can deliver.

To select the right hinge, you need to consider both door weight AND frequency of use. First consider frequency, which is simply a measure of how often the door opens and closes, or how much traffic it gets.

  • Low-frequency = 10x per day or less

  • Medium-frequency = 10x-24x per day

  • High-frequency = More than 25x per day and/or abused doors (ones that often get slammed against a stop, operate in a school, etc.)

For example, a storefront door, employee entrance or main entrance to a school or hospital is probably high-frequency.

Then combine the frequency with the door's weight. This load/frequency rating will determine whether you need a standard or heavy duty hinge. Here are the categories we use for SELECT Hinges:

  • Standard Duty - For low- or medium-frequency doors up to 200 lb. without frame or door reinforcement.

  • Heavy Duty - For high-frequency doors up to 200 lb. or medium-frequency doors up to 400 lb., both without frame or door reinforcement; or low-frequency doors up to 600 lb. with the use of Rivnuts in the frame and door.

  • Heavy Duty (LL) - For low-frequency doors up to 1,000 lb., including most lead-lined doors. (SELECT uses HD hinges with additional fastener holes.) Rivnuts are recommended in the frame and door on extremely tall, extremely heavy or wide doors.

Install the right duty hinge and you'll be much happier in the long run. If you're still not sure which duty you need, contact us for help.

[These ratings generally apply for 1-3/4 in. doors with a maximum width of 48 in., 16-gauge hollow metal (minimum) or 1/8 in. aluminum (minimum). Check individual hinge descriptions for exceptions when you buy.]
